Alex has over 30 years’ experience in general dentistry and a PhD in molecular biology and oral pathology. She was a founding co-partner in a private dental surgery for over 25 years and is an experienced practitioner, academic, teacher, examiner and manager, in a diverse range of dental settings.

Alex is a Principal Research Fellow at the Rural Health Research Institute at Charles Sturt University, and works with the Royal Flying Doctor Service as a regional/remote practising dentist.

Alex is a senior experienced examiner for the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons, the peak professional education body for dentists. She has also been a peer reviewer for the Dental Council of NSW, and a dental academic and educator (A/Prof of Clinical Dentistry, CSU).

Throughout her career, Alex has maintained a strong base in research science with academic rigor, exemplified by attainment an intercalated science degree, BSc(Dent)(Hons I) during her dental qualification, BDS Hons I.

Alex obtained her PhD in oral pathology in the molecular biology of tumour suppressor genes in oral carcinogenesis (1992), her interest in the molecular biology of keratinocytes was enhanced during her post doc years (1998-2004) at the Royal Prince Alfred Skin and Cancer foundation and are reflected in her publication record, with 514 citations, (PNAS Proceedings Of The National Academy Of Sciences Of the USA, Journal Of Pathology, Journal Of Cutaneous Pathology, Photochemistry And Photobiology, Journal Of Oral Pathology & Medicine), obtained whilst maintaining her clinical dental practice.

Her post-doctoral research contributed to the understanding of UVA as a human carcinogen; research led to changes in the Australian standard for sunscreen manufacture to include broader spectrum UVA blockers (AS/NZS 2604). Alex has proven involvement in lasting impactful research leading to the implementation of improved disease prevention.

Alex obtained her Fellowship the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons with distinction in 2005 and was inducted into Fellowship of the International College of Dental Surgeons in 2017, in recognition of her professional meritorious achievements. 

Alex’s teaching portfolio includes both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching for dental, medical and science students; undergraduate and postgraduate assessment for dental and medical students, including successful PhD supervision and graduate BSc Hons supervision; curriculum management and implementation; and peer review of professional standards. 

Alex has held an executive role within Charles Sturt University as the Clinical Director, of the CSU Dental Clinics for the duration of the COVID pandemic, and is a Member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
